Tommy was born on a snowy, windy day on February 22, 1938, in Winters, Tx to Charles and Beulah Cary of Novice, Tx. Tommy was the oldest of two siblings, Nancy (Handley) and Charlene (Gray). Tommy was raised on the ranch/farm and became a proud member of the Lawn Longhorns, where he found his lifelong love of sports, especially football. Beulah never missed a game and was known for running alongside him down the field as he broke loose with the ball. His senior year he played in an all-star football game in Kerrville, Tx where his father (who thought football was nonsense and wanted Tommy to be a steer wrestler) first saw him play.
Tommy went on to spring training at Texas Tech where he unfortunately injured his knee that ended his playing career.
Subsequently, he went to work in various trades including part owner of C&T auto of Tuscola for the old-timers, worked multiple jobs simultaneously while in the oilfield where he ended up in Borger, Tx and met his lifelong partner Anita June Cary. Anita was only 17 when they married on June 20, 1958. They eventually moved to Houston after Tommy was done in the oilfield. They raised two boys Mark and Tony, where he renewed his passion for sports in youth coaching which included almost never ending a season without winning a championship. Anita enjoyed as well participating by supporting the various leagues, team mom, etc. In 1978 the family moved back to Tuscola on a farm that they had previously bought with his parents, to get out of the big city and be closer to family and friends. Tommy and Anita were married for 39 years before Anita past on August 1, 2007, in their bed at home.
Tommy married Glenda Gail Murphy on July 26, 2008, in Abilene, Tx. On June 14, 2022, after a courageous battle with heart disease and kidney failure, he told his boys he wanted to discontinue treatment, go home, have his family cook him a steak and French fries. Tommy never asked much for himself, so of course, along with multiple gracious people of Hendrick Medical Center, West Texas Rehab Hospice, friends, and family members that were eager to fulfill his wishes, this all happened on the same day. Tommy regained his dignity and rested peacefully to fall asleep on Friday, June 17th with his boys by his side, and then woke up to his Lord and Savior and those that had proceeded him. Those family members include Charles and Beulah Cary, Nancy and Ferris Handley, Charlene and Robert Gray and his Love, Anita Cary.
Tommy loved people and especially his family, and was a precious listener, supporter, servant, and despite his simplistic nature, a very wise man. His loss is hard to bear for those that know and Love him. However, there is comfort in knowing that his soul is with his maker, the Great God Almighty that waits to save those regardless of their history if they will just invite him into their heart through his Son Jesus Christ. Forgive us for the length, but for a man of few accomplishments in the Worlds' view, there is so much more to write about the lives he touched while living in the dash.
He is survived by his two sons, Mark Cary, and Tony Cary (Gael); 7 grandkids, Coleton Cary (Kaitlyn), Chase Cary (Danielle), John Thomas Cary (Lisa), Connor Cary, Grace Cary, Cordell Cary, and Faith Cary & 7 great grandchildren.
