Ruby was born at home in Taylor county on January 8, 1932, to Edger and Bessie (Patterson) Crew. Ruby attended school in Abilene. She was sixteen when she met the love of her life James Thompson. They married on July 24, 1948 and spent the next 63years in together.

She went to work at Timex then Gibson department store as the warehouse manager, shipping and receiving manager, and buying agent. She enjoyed her trips to "Market" for Gibson's. She retired in 1980 and they moved to north east Runnels County. Where she helped James with his herd of cattle.

She loved to read mystery books, gardening, yard work, and in later years to travel. She had a very dry sense of humor and was known to not hold back and tell you how it was.
