Norman was born November 15, 1932 on the family farm outside Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, to parents Harry Milton McVey and Susan (Weaver) McVey. He was the youngest of eight children, having two brothers and four sisters and one child dying at birth. He grew up helping the family with the farm and a thriving turkey business. Norman also served one year in Vietnam and was again decorated several times for his achievements. After his retirement in 1973, Norman actively pursued his passion as Elm Valley's handyman, installing water wells, wiring over thirty of his neighbors' homes, and repairing what ever was broken.

Norman's other passions included raising award winning pecans, keeping up his swimming pool for all the area kids, and ministering to the residents of all the local nursing homes.

Norman was the last of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Susan McVey; brothers, Melvin and Raymond; sisters, Marjorie, Shirley, Ruth, and Betty.
