Mary Maurine Newman Griffith, 85, of Round Rock, TX, passed away on November 22, 2019 two days short of her 86th birthday at Falcon Ridge Rehabilitation in Hutto, TX. Graveside services will be held 2pm Saturday December 7th at Tuscola Cemetery with Ray Thompson of Funeral Directors Life and Johnny Sheffield of Tuscola, coofficiating. Services are under the direction of Fry-Smith Funeral Home, 502 Kent St, Tuscola TX.
Mary was born in Tuscola, TX on November 24, 1933 to Luther and Margueritte Newman. She went to school at South Taylor High School in Tuscola, TX and McMurry College in Abilene, TX. She married her high school sweetheart, A Coyt Griffith on June 16, 1984 in Tuscola, TX. Mom would tell us that she was mad at him for 25 years which is why it took so long for them to get married. They worked together making pipe fence panels for cattle and other livestock until Coyt passed and the plans were passed to his son, Larry Griffith. Mary worked as a certified nurse’s aide for Seaton Hospital in Austin, TX for 18 years. They just recently dedicated the room she made infant milk in as “Mary’s Milk Room” by her co-workers and friends from Seaton Hospital. Mom would tell us stories about her childhood when they lived in Tuscola and rented farm land until World War II broke out and they moved to San Diego, CA where her mom and dad worked for the Air Craft factory. She said they spent a lot of time going to the fair. She told us her dad had a garden beside their apartment. They ate lots of tomatoes it seemed.
Mary was preceded in death by husband A. Coyt Griffith, her parents, Luther and Margueritte Newman, her brother, Bob Newman, granddaughter Nicole Vasquez and ex-husband and father of her children, Harley Neal Holloway.
Mary is survived by children and spouses: Karen and Frank Toms of Tuscola, TX, Lyla Holloway of Round Rock, TX, Kelly and Bootsie Holloway of Georgetown, TX, Kim Holloway of Adkins, TX, and John L Holloway of Round Rock, TX, 8 living grandchildren: Steven Holloway, Mary Bailey, Lexi Holloway, Crystal Vasquez, Tyson Vasquez, Leslie Anmons, Jason Holloway, and Hannah Toms and 17 plus greatgrandchildren, her sister Margaret Butchee of Hamlin, and many cousins, in-laws, nephews and nieces.
The family of Mary Griffith wishes to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who called and sent cards to the many family members of Mary, Ray Thompson and Johnny Sheffield as ministers, the doctors, nurses and aides of Rainier Hospice Care of Round Rock, TX, Fry-Smith Funeral Home in Tuscola TX, FDLIC employees, and Falcon Ridge Rehabilitation in Hutto TX for all their assistance during this time of need.
