BUFFALO GAP: Margaret Ruth Stokes, 98, passed away at her home Saturday, September 19, 2015. A graveside service will be held in the Buffalo Gap Cemetery on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 11:00am, directed by Fry~Smith Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, from 7 to 9pm at the funeral home in Tuscola.
Margret was born on September 22, 1916, to Tom and Florence (Cowles) Kimbrough in Wills Point, Texas.
Margaret moved to Abilene in 1945, she owned and operated Mar-Tell answering service in Abilene for over 30 years.
She married John Stokes in Covington N.M. on October 15, 1954. They called Abilene and Taylor County home.
Margaret possessed two green thumbs. She loved to garden and could grow almost anything she planted. She was not very fond of the indoors; she was the happiest digging in the dirt, tending plants and watching the wild life in her yard. Even in her early 90’s, she would still dig holes and plants trees or shrubs; the hole digging might have taken a few days to finish, but in the end her family would always find a new plant planted. When she was not gardening, she was volunteering at the VFW where she was member of the auxiliary. Margaret enjoyed donating her time to the men and women who had served overseas.
She is survived by her son Robert James Warren and wife Sonya of Buffalo Gap, Marshall Kimbrough (Kim) Warren and wife Carolyn of Gustavus, AK; six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Martha Ruth Colley, and brother Duke Kimbrough.
