Larry Wayne Pemberton, 73, passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, December 9, 2021, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, directed by Fry~Smith Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for Larry will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from 5 to 7pm at the funeral home.
Larry was born on November 5, 1948, to Joseph Nunnley and Charlene (Heard) Pemberton in Brownwood. He attended school in Early ISD. After school, he joined the Army where he trained and worked as a crew chief and door gunner for the UH-1, the Huey.
He met Karen Lancaster while in high school and they dated while he was in the Army. They married on August 23, 1968 and welcomed two children into their family, Treva and Jake.
Larry and Karen moved to Mineral Wells, and he went to work for Bell Helicopter, he later moved on to Southwestern Bell Telephone and then into oilfield sales for Guiberson. Larry, like many, soon tired of the boom cycle in the oilfield, went to work for Taylor County where he retired as a road supervisor.
Larry was always full of great stories, advice, and never met a stranger. He was the dad that everyone wanted to have and always had a smile with a strong welcoming handshake for everyone he encountered.
In Larry's younger years he was a Golden Gloves Boxer and rode bulls. Later in life, he found his love of roping calves and team roping. He was also a lifelong fisherman. His most enjoyable pastime was following his grandchildren around; he never missed an event that had a grandchild in it.
He is survived by his son, Jake Pemberton of Ovalo; daughter, Treva Gambrell of Lawn; brothers, Dean of Searcy, AR, Tommy and wife Shelley of Blanket; sister-in-law Kathy Pemberton of Snyder; grandchildren Wyatt Gambrell of Spoken, WA, Laramie Gambrell of Stephenville, Brenham Pemberton of Waco, and Teague Pemberton of Brock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen (2020), brother Leon Pemberton(2021), and granddaughter Kyli Pemberton (1998)
