Bill Swanzy

Bill Swanzy passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Visitation will be held at Fry-Smith Funeral Home on Friday, February 9 from 5-7pm. Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Buffalo Gap on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00am with burial to follow at Buffalo Gap Cemetery.

Bill was born on June 27, 1939 to Hilliard and Helen (McCollum) Swanzy in Rosebud, Texas. He was the youngest of 7 children, with three older brothers, two older sisters, and a twin sister. He graduated from Rosebud High School and moved to Abilene to attend Abilene Christian College. While going to college, he worked for Mack Eplen's Restaurant. It was through this work at the restaurant that he met Minnie. The two fell in love and were married. Then Bill went to work for Cameron Wholesale for 33 years. In the 62 years Bill and Minnie were married, they grew a family that now includes their three children, spouses, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Bill loved to drink coffee and chat. He looked after and cared for those he loved and cared about. He was good at checking in on people and helping with needs they had. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football. He spent time volunteering with Meals on Wheels in Buffalo Gap and for many years Bill was in charge of the Buffalo Gap Flea Market. Bill enjoyed square dancing and two-stepping and according to his family, loved to eat. It is said that he would eat four meals a day with snacks in between.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, his wife, and one granddaughter. He is survived by his sister Carolyn Hurt, son Billy Mack and wife Kayla, son Robert and wife Sandra, daughter Misti, and grandchildren and great children.

Bill was loved by his family and friends and will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Buffalo Gap Cemetery.
